Beat the Heat: Summer Safety Tips!

As temperatures rise during the summer months, engineering and maintenance professionals often face unique challenges while working outdoors, on rooftops, and in other heat-exposed environments. At GSH, the safety and well-being of our employees remains our top priority, and that includes taking proactive steps to prevent heat-related illnesses.

Working in high temperatures can increase the risk of heat exhaustion, heat stress, and dehydration. These conditions can affect not only personal health but also concentration, decision-making, and overall job performance. By taking simple precautions, teams can stay safe, productive, and prepared throughout the summer season.

Three Simple Ways to Stay Safe in the Heat

Stay Hydrated

One of the most important defenses against heat-related illness is proper hydration. Drink water regularly throughout the day, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Waiting until thirst sets in may mean your body is already becoming dehydrated.

Take Breaks When Needed

When working in hot environments, it’s important to listen to your body. Regular rest breaks can help prevent overheating and allow workers to recover before symptoms of heat stress develop.

Seek Shade or Cooler Areas

Whenever possible, take breaks in shaded areas, air-conditioned spaces, or other cool environments. Even short periods out of direct sunlight can help lower body temperature and reduce the effects of prolonged heat exposure.

GSH Marks World Earth Day With Community Action

On World Earth Day, GSH reflects on this year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet,” a powerful reminder that meaningful change often begins with small, practical actions.

To put this message into action, a GSH team steps away from day‑to‑day operations and into the Cambridge sunshine to support a local litter pick around the Eddington estate—one of the University of Cambridge’s newest residential communities and a site GSH is proud to help maintain.

Equipped with high‑visibility gear, litter pickers, and plenty of enthusiasm (and humour), the team works across the estate to collect and safely dispose of waste, helping keep the environment clean, safe, and welcoming for residents and visitors alike.

It is easy to walk past litter—but far more meaningful to stop and take responsibility. That sense of ownership is what “Our Power”represents at GSH: the ability—and responsibility—to care for the environments we support and to give back to the communities we serve.
