GSH Apprentice Plumber – Charlie

Meet Charlie, an Apprentice Plumber at GSH, who is building a strong, well‑rounded skill set as he develops his career in engineering. With a long‑term ambition to qualify as both a plumber and gas engineer, Charlie is already well on his way—gaining hands‑on experience and valuable professional skills through his apprenticeship.

What Has Charlie Enjoyed Most About His Apprenticeship?

Charlie values the opportunity to learn across multiple trades:

“I really enjoy developing a wide range of skills—not just plumbing, but also carpentry and electrical work. Getting exposure to different trades helps me understand how everything fits together on site.”

Developing Beyond Technical Skills

The apprenticeship experience also supports Charlie’s growth beyond hands‑on engineering work:

“My communication skills have definitely improved. I’m much more confident speaking with the office team and clients. I’ve also learned how to use GSH’s CAFM system, manage my time better, and plan my work effectively.”

Building a Strong Foundation for the Future

Reflecting on his journey so far, Charlie highlights the responsibility and confidence he’s gained:

“I’ve been given a lot of responsibility, which has helped me develop a strong work discipline. I feel more confident in myself and my abilities—it’s a foundation that will support me throughout my career.”

Charlie’s experience shows that apprenticeships at GSH build far more than technical capability. They help develop confidence, professionalism, communication skills, and lifelong learning habits that prepare individuals for sustained success.

A fantastic way to round off GSH’s National Apprenticeship Week stories.

Meet Millie: Building Careers Through GSH Apprenticeships

GSH Apprenticeship: Millie

Meet Millie, a Business Support Apprentice at GSH, currently working toward her Level 3 qualification, with completion planned for 2026. Through her apprenticeship, Millie gains hands‑on experience, professional skills, and a clear view of the many career pathways available within a growing facilities management business.

Why Millie Chooses an Apprenticeship

Millie values the balance her apprenticeship provides between learning and real‑world experience:

“It feels like the best of both worlds—learning, gaining real work experience, and getting paid. I’ve seen friends go to university, build up debt, and then struggle to find work because they don’t have experience. This gives me both.”

Looking Ahead to the Future

The exposure to day‑to‑day business operations proves especially impactful:

“The best part has been gaining real‑world experience and understanding how a business actually operates. I didn’t realise how many career paths were available when I started. HR really interests me, and that’s where I see myself in the future.”

Millie’s journey highlights the value of apprenticeships in building confidence, practical experience, and career clarity. At GSH, apprenticeship programmes open doors, develop transferable skills, and support long‑term professional growth.

National Apprenticeship Week: Building Careers at GSH

National Apprenticeship Week, is a time to recognise the vital role apprenticeships play in building strong careers and a skilled workforce.

We asked our Director for Scotland, Mark Jenkins, to share his thoughts on apprenticeships and their impact.

“I started my career as an apprentice electrician. That time on the tools gave me far more than a trade. It provided the foundations I have built on throughout my career and has supported my progression to my current position.

Despite undertaking further education during my career, my apprenticeship remains one of the most important qualifications I have achieved. It shaped my approach to work, leadership, and standards.

At GSH Group, we recognise the value apprentices bring, not just to the future of our business, but to the standards and culture we deliver today. Apprenticeships combine hands-on experience with learning in a way that develops capability, confidence, and pride in the job.

I am proud to have started my journey as an apprentice and equally proud to support the next generation of apprentices within GSH Group.”

Meet Ashleigh: Business Administration Apprenticeships at GSH

Meet Ashleigh, a Business Administrator Apprentice at GSH Group, currently completing her Level 3 qualification and on track to qualify later this year.

Why did you choose the apprenticeship route?

“I loved the idea of learning while gaining real work experience. It just felt more valuable to me than a purely academic route.”

What do you enjoy most about your role?

“Honestly — all of it! I’ve really enjoyed learning about different aspects of business administration, especially IT systems and developing my Excel skills. But what I enjoy most is the interaction with engineers, customers and colleagues. That’s what makes my day — and what I learn the most from.”

Ashleigh’s role shows that apprenticeships aren’t just about learning a job — they’re about building confidence, skills and experience that last a lifetime.

Meet Sam, an Apprentice Plumber at GSH Group, delivering essential services for our customers every day. Sam is nearing the end of his apprenticeship and is looking forward to becoming fully qualified in 2026.

Why did you choose an apprenticeship over a traditional academic route?

“Learning on the job really appealed to me. I felt it was the most practical way to build the skills I need to succeed in my career.”

Why plumbing?

I’m very hands-on and love fault-finding and problem-solving — that process of elimination really motivates me. I also enjoy using different techniques to find solutions. Innovation definitely inspires me.”

What do you enjoy most about your role?

“Working as part of a team and tackling challenging jobs. I know it sounds strange, but I genuinely enjoy dealing with problems — I guess that makes me the perfect engineer!”

And your ambitions for the future?

“I want to keep developing my engineering skills, especially around future technologies like air source heat pumps, alongside more traditional qualifications such as gas certification. Long term, I’d love to be my own boss… maybe even running GSH Group one day.”
