National Apprenticeship Week, is a time to recognise the vital role apprenticeships play in building strong careers and a skilled workforce.
We asked our Director for Scotland, Mark Jenkins, to share his thoughts on apprenticeships and their impact.
“I started my career as an apprentice electrician. That time on the tools gave me far more than a trade. It provided the foundations I have built on throughout my career and has supported my progression to my current position.
At GSH Group, we recognise the value apprentices bring, not just to the future of our business, but to the standards and culture we deliver today. Apprenticeships combine hands-on experience with learning in a way that develops capability, confidence, and pride in the job.
I am proud to have started my journey as an apprentice and equally proud to support the next generation of apprentices within GSH Group.”
Meet Ashleigh, a Business Administrator Apprentice at GSH Group, currently completing her Level 3 qualification and on track to qualify later this year.
Why did you choose the apprenticeship route?
“I loved the idea of learning while gaining real work experience. It just felt more valuable to me than a purely academic route.”
What do you enjoy most about your role?
“Honestly — all of it! I’ve really enjoyed learning about different aspects of business administration, especially IT systems and developing my Excel skills. But what I enjoy most is the interaction with engineers, customers and colleagues. That’s what makes my day — and what I learn the most from.”
Ashleigh’s role shows that apprenticeships aren’t just about learning a job — they’re about building confidence, skills and experience that last a lifetime.
Meet Sam, an Apprentice Plumber at GSH Group, delivering essential services for our customers every day. Sam is nearing the end of his apprenticeship and is looking forward to becoming fully qualified in 2026.
Why did you choose an apprenticeship over a traditional academic route?
“Learning on the job really appealed to me. I felt it was the most practical way to build the skills I need to succeed in my career.”
“Working as part of a team and tackling challenging jobs. I know it sounds strange, but I genuinely enjoy dealing with problems — I guess that makes me the perfect engineer!”
And your ambitions for the future?
“I want to keep developing my engineering skills, especially around future technologies like air source heat pumps, alongside more traditional qualifications such as gas certification. Long term, I’d love to be my own boss… maybe even running GSH Group one day.”
Watch this space — CEO Sam might be closer than we think.

GSH Maintenance Team Overhauls Critical AHU Vibration Springs
Deep beneath the laboratories and animal facilities of the National Institutes of Health in Baltimore, a dedicated crew keeps the air flowing reliably — day in, day out.
Right now, the GSH maintenance team is in the middle of a major project: replacing the massive vibration-isolation springs on air handling units that serve the NIA and NIDA vivariums. These are no ordinary AHUs. Each one pulls 100% outside air, cools it across chilled-water coils, and delivers over 30,000 CFM to sensitive animal holding rooms and research labs.
At the heart of each unit sits a single 125 hp motor driving a Twin City fan — a combined assembly weighing almost 6 tons. The only thing keeping that mass from shaking the building apart? Four heavy-duty coil springs that had been on duty for nearly 20 years. After two decades of humid Baltimore summers, condensate dripping from the cooling coils had migrated into the motor compartments. The result: springs that looked more like rust fossils than precision components.
Decades of condensate exposure turned solid steel into rust; almost no original metal remains – just rust flakes.
The GSH team, often working in the tightest spaces, has been tackling these units one by one.
Phil Heim, Assistant Chief Engineer, cutting free rust-locked components.
Removing the springs for a 6-ton motor/fan assembly in a cramped air handling unit requires rigging, jacks, grinding, torches, and decades of collective experience.
Some springs literally crumbled upon removal. Replaced with springs fresh, powder-coated, and ready for the next 20+ years.
Before: on the edge of failure. After: smooth, quiet, and built to last.
The project remains ongoing, with three additional Air Handling Units still scheduled for the same treatment. That means more heavy lifts and sparks in the dark—all to ensure research animals and vivarium staff remain comfortable. Meanwhile, keeping the laboratories operating so they never miss a breath of perfectly conditioned air. The next time everything in a critical NIH facility simply works, remember the GSH maintenance team. Nonetheless, the professionals who wrestle rust, gravity, and six‑ton assemblies so vital science continues without interruption.
GSH proudly partners with Nurture Group to refresh the garden at Ciaran’s House, a Young Lives vs Cancer home in Edinburgh, Scotland. Despite challenging weather conditions, the team transforms the outdoor space into a warm, welcoming environment designed to offer comfort and respite for families during difficult times.
Thanks to the hard work and commitment of Brian, John, Jason, David, and Mark Jenkins from GSH, the garden becomes a space that reflects care, thoughtfulness, and community support. Projects like this highlight the positive impact that collaboration and volunteer effort can have beyond day‑to‑day facilities management.
GSH is honoured to play a small but meaningful role in supporting organisations that provide care where it is needed most—making a difference, one garden at a time.
