Engineering Spotlight: Preventive Maintenance in Action

Some of the most important work in a facility happens where most people never see it.

For this GSH Engineering Spotlight, we’re going behind the scenes with our technicians as they carry out a scroll compressor tip seal overhaul, the kind of detailed maintenance that helps keep critical equipment doing its job.

Small Parts, Important Jobs

Scroll compressors are found within many HVAC and mechanical systems, and like any hardworking piece of equipment, components can wear over time.

Tip seals play an important role in maintaining compression within applicable scroll compressor designs. As they wear, compressor performance can be affected, which is why inspecting and replacing them at the right time is an important part of maintaining the equipment.

For our technicians, a tip seal overhaul means carefully working through the compressor, inspecting components and completing the necessary maintenance before putting the equipment back into service.

It’s precise work, but it’s also a great example of what preventive maintenance looks like in practice.

Fixing Problems Before They Become Bigger Ones

Not every maintenance issue starts with an alarm or a system shutting down.

Often, it’s a small sign of wear that an experienced technician knows to look for.

Taking care of those issues early can help equipment continue to perform as intended, reduce the likelihood of an unexpected breakdown and potentially extend its useful life.

That’s why preventive maintenance is such a big part of what our engineering teams do. Rather than waiting for something to fail, they’re regularly checking equipment, watching for changes in performance and taking action when it’s needed.

The Work Behind a Reliable Facility

Most people walking through a building won’t ever see this work happening. They simply expect the heating, cooling and other critical systems around them to work.

Behind that reliability are technicians who know the equipment, pay attention to the details and understand how important those systems are to the rest of the facility.

We’re proud of the knowledge and hands-on experience our GSH engineers and technicians bring to our clients every day.

Keep an eye out for our next Engineering Spotlight as we share more of the work happening behind the scenes at the facilities we support.
